There’s something people often say when they visit BVIS Ho Chi Minh City for the first time.
“Every time anybody walks through our door and visits,” said Principal Simon Higham, “they always say there's something about it.”
What is that something? For both Simon and incoming Principal Deirdre Grimshaw, it comes down to one word: culture.
“It's built around genuine love for the building and the people within it,” Simon said. “There is genuine love within this school by staff, students, and also parents… That is what makes the school what it is.”
Deirdre, who will formally take over as Principal next academic year — and is known to the school community simply as Dee — agrees. And for her, it’s more than just atmosphere. It’s a mindset.
“It’s about relationships,” she said. “That culture of relationships, that understanding that every single person in this building matters... That sense of belonging… that speaks volumes.”
Both principals agree that BVIS HCMC is unlike any other international school in Ho Chi Minh City — and that its unique blend of local grounding and global readiness is central to its mission.
“Every single child is unique,” Dee said. “Our curriculum is rigorous, delivered in two languages… keeping students grounded locally while preparing them to thrive globally.”
Personalised learning is at the heart of that experience — whether in academics, leadership, or student wellbeing.
“Every decision we make must put students at the heart,” she said. “From learning spaces to trips to timetables — if it benefits our students, we move forward. That’s what leadership here looks like.”
And for both leaders, Vietnamese identity isn’t an add-on — it’s essential.
“Ultimately, underpinning all of that is BVIS’ strong commitment to Vietnamese language and culture,” Dee said. “That is, by its nature, the foundation of BVIS. Making sure we keep that at the heart of everything ensures that the culture of the school, the relationships within the school, and the growth of the school stay true to its values and mission.”
“We ensure students stay connected to their roots so that when they return to Vietnam [after studying or working abroad], they continue to feel a deep sense of belonging — in their communities, their families, and their culture,” Simon said.
“It’s not just about us growing,” Simon said. “It’s about seeing the growth of others as well… Seeing Dee step into my shoes is a privilege. She knows the school, understands the culture, and will take it even further.”
“It’s not a one-man show,” Dee added. “It’s a whole school team and dynamic… everybody has a voice. That’s what makes this school successful.”
That shared voice — between staff, students and families — is what defines BVIS Ho Chi Minh City.
“The identity of the school is strong,” Dee said. “And that’s something we’ll always protect.”
