In this interview, Sosuke reflects on how the school has helped him grow in confidence, broaden his perspective, and shape his vision for the future.
BIS has provided me with many opportunities to grow both academically and personally. I have improved my skills in reading, writing, and researching, but also in communicating with others. This has been possible thanks to supportive teachers and friends. I truly value this environment, and I believe it has prepared me well for the future.
I realised how much I could expand my perspective on global issues simply through class discussions and debates with classmates from diverse backgrounds. These conversations taught me the importance of open-mindedness—forming my own opinions while also listening carefully to others.
When I first joined BIS, I wasn’t very confident in speaking English. However, through lessons and daily interactions with friends, I became much more comfortable. Over time, I developed the ability to speak clearly in front of groups, which gave me the confidence I have today.
Composing lessons in music were particularly exciting. They gave me the opportunity to apply the theories I had learned and create original pieces. Although composing takes time and effort, I found it refreshing because it allowed me to express myself authentically, even during busy or challenging times.
I studied Japanese, Business, Music, Mathematics, Computer Science, and English. Before choosing, the school held an information evening where teachers explained each subject in detail, which was very helpful. I also sought advice from senior students, whose experiences guided me in making my final decisions.
Although most lessons are taught in English, I use online dictionaries to check new academic terms in Japanese. I also practice daily conversations with my Japanese friends and receive valuable support from the Japanese teacher at BIS, especially when writing essays. These opportunities have allowed me to maintain and strengthen my first language skills.
When I first arrived at BIS, senior students helped me by translating during parent evenings, and I was very grateful for their support. Later, as a Sixth Form student, I wanted to provide the same help to new Japanese students. These experiences not only allowed me to support others but also gave me the chance to reflect on my own progress.
As a Japanese student, I wanted to share and promote my culture with others. Beyond introducing the more visible aspects of culture, such as food or traditions, I hoped to encourage deeper conversations about values and philosophies. I felt especially proud when students showed respect and genuine interest in understanding these core aspects of Japanese culture.
I'm still exploring my options, but I plan to continue studying business, particularly marketing, which has become my favourite subject. I have developed many useful skills during my time at BIS, and I hope to use them to pursue my goal of becoming a global marketer.
