PE Assessment
Assessment in PE at BIS Abu Dhabi is designed to support student progress, celebrate achievement, and provide meaningful feedback that helps every child reach their full potential.
We use the Head, Heart, Hands framework to guide both teaching and assessment. This approach ensures we value the full scope of a student’s development, not just physical skills, but also understanding, character, and attitude.
What is the Head, Heart, Hands Framework?
The Head, Heart, Hands model provides a holistic view of student progress by assessing three key areas:
- Head - Cognitive Understanding
Students are assessed on their ability to understand rules, tactics, strategies, and concepts related to different sports and physical activities. - Heart - Character and Attitude
This focuses on students' effort, teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and overall approach to learning and participating in PE. - Hands - Physical Competence
This relates to students' practical performance, including skill execution, technique, and physical capabilities relevant to each activity.
Each of these areas is weighted differently depending on the sport or activity, ensuring assessment is fair and appropriate for different contexts.
'I Can' Statements and Progression
To ensure clarity and consistency, students are assessed against sport-specific 'I Can' statements. These progressive statements outline what students need to demonstrate to move through different levels of achievement in each sport or activity.
At the end of each unit, students will receive a grade for Head, Heart, and Hands, which together contribute to their overall concept grade.
Assessment Across Key PE Concepts
Throughout the year, students will be assessed across a variety of key sporting concepts, ensuring broad development and exposure to different activities. These include:
- Invasion Games – e.g., Football, Basketball, Netball, Rugby
- Net and Wall Games – e.g., Volleyball, Badminton, Tennis
- Striking and Fielding Games – e.g., Cricket, Rounders, Softball
- Swimming and Water Safety
- Athletics and Fitness
- Dance (where applicable)
This broad, structured approach allows students to develop a wide range of physical, cognitive, and personal skills, supporting both individual growth and long-term engagement in physical activity.
